A confounding factor in recovery from trauma is the phenomenon of “hypofrontality,” the process where the frontal lobe, the seat of problem solving and cognitive controls, is impaired. Hormones are not released at the same levels to facilitate working memory, which is critical to organize sensory and cognitive information and respond to the environment. It can be compared to feeling sleep deprived, overwhelmed, and lost. You just can’t seem to get your thinking moving, you struggle to process.
